What is ReOpen Asbury Park?

ReOPEN stands for Realizing Opportunities for Public Enjoyment of Neighborhoods. It is an initiative to allow for the expansion of dining and retail and create a Downtown Pedestrian Zone. The Summer 2021 Mural Art Project features mural installations by 13 local and regional participating artists along Cookman Avenue and in Springwood Park. The Cookman Avenue Live! Music Series brought live performances to Cookman Avenue throughout the summer. Both programs aim at bringing art center stage this summer after a long hiatus of exposure to the arts for many,

The Asbury Park Arts Council is supportive of the City’s ReOpen Asbury Park program that saw much of the Cookman Avenue corridor shut down to vehicle traffic this summer in order to encourage a pedestrian friendly experience with businesses extended onto the sidewalks with retail and dining options. The Asbury Park Music Foundation has programmed live music on the 700 Block of Cookman Avenue on Friday and Sunday evenings throughout the summer (AsburyParkMusicLives.org). In late May, as part of ReOpen, the City hosted a Mural Arts Project that saw thirteen artists painting temporary walls along Cookman Avenue and in Springwood Park. The Summer 2021 Mural Art Project was funded by the City of Asbury Park and Monmouth Arts and will be part of a larger self-guided walking, biking and/or scooting public art tour. The Asbury Park Arts Council is working with the City on the print promotion of the Mural Arts Project and anticipates incorporating the murals into a wider public art tour.
