City of Asbury Park Spring 2023 Mural Project

In late February, the City of Asbury Park, in conjunction with the Public Arts Commission, issued a call for artists from all backgrounds, locations, and levels of experience to create murals on the east side of the city-owned Wastewater Treatment Facility on the north end of the boardwalk. Four artists, including two from Asbury Park, were selected from over 50 proposals and work commenced in the beginning of May. This is a continuation of the Summer 2022 mural project on the Wastewater Treatment Facility that saw eleven artists paint murals on the south side of the building. APAC is assisting in the 2023 project by pledging grant funds and providing logistical support.

Film Maker Meet Ups

APAC hosted its first Film Maker Meet Up on July 27th at Parlor Gallery on Cookman Avenue which was attended by more than 25 people.  The night provided a casual setting for local and regional film makers and others with a professional interest in film to gather and exchange ideas.  APAC convened the group after receiving feedback from previous networking sessions that a specialized event would be welcomed, but also in advance of this year’s APin3 Film Challenge, as this is the natural audience for this creative endeavor.  This is also a target group to share the news that the City of Asbury Park is working to become compliant with the NJ TV & Film Commission’s ‘Film Ready’ program and APAC is assisting in updating the databases of location photos and ancillary services.

A second Meet Up was held on September 27th, also at Parlor Gallery, and the crowd was even larger than the first gathering. Attendees introduced themselves briefly to each other in a variation of speed dating and before general networking began they got to hear from director, producer and coach, Joyce Mishaan, on her experience making the feature documentary, Lee Fields: Faithful Man. Based on popular demand, more Meet Ups are forthcoming! If you are interested in getting on the notification list, please send an email to mike@asburyparkartscouncil.org.

Lake Avenue Storm Drain Beautification

After the completion of 2022’s beautification of light pole bases along Lake Avenue, APAC was approached by representatives of the City of Asbury Park’s Green Team who were considering launching an Adopt-A-Drain program. This program encourages residents or businesses to adopt storm drains to keep trash and debris from clogging or otherwise infiltrating the drains to the city’s lakes. The Green Team asked if APAC could beautify several storm drains to help draw attention to the effort. The matter was discussed further with the Wesley Lake Commission and with their support and the permission of the city, APAC used grant funds to engage two artists to paint a decorative scheme on two storm drains along the Wesley Lake side of Lake Avenue between Grand Avenue and Emory Street. These drains were selected due to the high volume of foot traffic along this block.

More information on the city’s Adopt-A-Drain program can be found HERE.
